Forklift Safety
By Tony Robinson
Safety in the workplace is paramount no matter what industry you are involved in.
Safety reports show that in Australia for example, one worker was killed every month as a result of forklift operating.
Anyone that is planning on driving a forklift needs to know all about forklift safety. If you are looking for a job that entails driving a lift truck you are going to find out that if you are not aware of the safety that you have to practice for driving a lift then you will have to learn that first. You have to go through safety training as well as classes in order to operate a lift truck. Once you have gone through the class, taken a test, and passed it, then you will able to get your forklift certification or licenses.
For businesses that are planning to purchase a forklift it is important to know all about forklift safety and procedures. All drivers and other workers will need to know how to operate the lift in a safe way so that they will not injure themselves or anyone else, and for other workers, they will need to be aware of safety around a forklift.
When you are learning all about forklift safety, you will learn operational strategies as well as management strategies such as putting the stabilizer feet down on the ground while you are picking up a load. You also learn that if you need to carry a heavy load down a slope or hill that you do it in reverse. Something else that may sound familiar in a safety for forklifts class is to always wear your seatbelt, and make sure that when you are reversing that your forklift is beeping to warn others around you that you may not can see them. There should be floor plans of zones around the factory floor, which are pedestrian, free so the forklift driver is not concerned about people walking in those areas.
Forklift safety is not complicated and a lot of it really comes natural to anyone with common sense. However, policies and procedures must be put into place and everyone must know and follow these.
There is an old adage that says "Accidents don't just happen, they are caused" If you are given a safety book to follow when you are going through the course then studying it might be a good idea, so that you can pass the test with flying colors. Once you pass your safety test, you are given a certification or license that will legally allow you to operate a forklift.
Most places of business will insist that their employees become certified to drive a lift truck. This means that they will have to go through the forklift safety course and pass it. Pay attention while you are taking this course, you just might learn something that you did not know. Practicing safety while operating a lift or being around a forklift can save your life or someone else's.
Don't forget, if you see anyone operating a forklift in an unsafe manner be sure that you report them to the proper authorities.
